Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships allow you to launch a new career, be mentored while learning valuable skills, and be paid during the process by a company who is making an investment in you.  This earn-as-you-learn model allows you to directly plug into a career.  In Florida, the majority of Registered Apprenticeships are in the skilled trades.  However, there are many apprenticeship occupations in varied industries, such as IT and Life Sciences.  There are also apprenticeships offered by companies that are quality earn-as-you-learn programs.  Many also associate an Apprenticeship with skilled trades.  The skilled trades are one of the most in-demand job classes in the world today and provide an opportunity to create a strong, high-paying career. One of the first phases in achieving a career in the trades is through an apprenticeship. Earn Up can help high school students, veterans and adult workers navigate the path to apprenticeships in Northeast Florida.

Apprenticeship is a system for training a new generation of practitioners of a trade or profession with on-the-job training and accompanying study. Apprenticeships can also enable practitioners to gain a license to practice in a regulated occupation. Most of their training is done while working for an employer who helps the apprentices learn their trade or profession.  The idea is that the individuals will learn the occupation, achieve measurable competencies, and continue to grow and develop their skills.

Apprenticeship positions are available across a number of skill sets in the Jacksonville area, including IT, Project manager, HR, Aviation Repair, Automotive Mechanic, Carpenter, Electrician, HVAC Installer, Industrial Repair Technician, Instrument Mechanic, Ironworker, Technology Associate, Line Erector, Machine Assembler, Machinist, Plumber, Pipefitter, Sheet Metal Worker, Outboard Motor Mechanic and Telecommunications Technician.

Apprenticeship lengths are determined by the industry standards for the occupation and can vary significantly.  Those that complete an apprenticeship are considered journeyman, indicating successful program completion.  Those completing a registered program will obtain a national certification from the state.  This means that the individual is fully trained in the occupation.

For members of the military or veterans, apprenticeship is a unique and rewarding pathway to developing in-demand workplace and technical skills while earning a paycheck.
