YearUp - Bank of America

Year Up is a one-year, workforce development training program that provides urban young adults, ages 18-24, with a combination of technical and professional skills as they work toward an internship and career path in business or technology. In Jacksonville, the program serves approximately 160 students per year. The program is designed to give students an opportunity they may not otherwise have.

The Year Up program is available to those who have a high school diploma or GED, and have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree. The first six months of the intensive job training program involve classroom learning at Florida State College at Jacksonville along with weekly coaching and mentoring. Students also learn writing skills, networking skills and professional behavior skills while in the classroom part of Year Up.

The second half of the program places students in a full-time internship with a local corporation, such as Bank of America, for six months. Students also receive a monthly stipend of up to $600 a month after signing a contract and an opportunity to receive entry level career offers upon completion of the program.

Clay County Utility Authority

In 2015, Clay County Utility Authority (CCUA) launched a high school internship program to address a shortage of operators. Recognizing that Operators required technical education, passing a test, and a year of experience to obtain a license rather than a college degree, CCUA management considered these natural initial positions to focus on. When Executive Director Jeremy Johnston began his tenure in March 2020, he identified the opportunity to formalize the internship initiative. In collaboration with the Clay County School District, applications open in late August and interviews take place in September, with October 1st serving as a typical start date.

Each year, five interns, primarily seniors, are assigned across five specialized areas: water and wastewater operations, business operations, engineering, GIS, and IT. Paid at $15 per hour, interns work around 20-25 hours weekly, accommodating their school schedules.

Reflecting on lessons learned while operating the internship program, Mr. Johnston emphasized the importance of formalized policies with flexibility for regular updates. Continuous staff development, focusing on long-term career paths, has been pivotal in fostering a supportive culture as employees’ enthusiasm for promotional opportunities and growth into supervisory roles. Employees are supportive and welcoming and want to teach and mentor. Department leaders are active participants in the interview process, too. Furthermore, embracing and balancing emerging technologies and the innovative spirit of young students is essential for addressing industry challenges, demanding sustained investment and commitment.

The success stories are compelling – since 2015, all operations interns have secured full-time positions, illustrating the program's commitment to nurturing young talent and addressing critical workforce needs in the community. Beyond the success of retaining young talent, three of the original interns are now lead operators in their respective departments.

Bridgenext

Bridgenext, formerly Emtec, relocated its global headquarters to Jacksonville in 2019 seeing the potential to grow their business and draw top talent to the region where an office was already established with clients such as Duval County Public Schools (DCPS), Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) , FSCJ and the City of Jacksonville. The company’s ethos of “clients for life” underscores its commitment to delivering exemplary performance and fostering trust for long-time partnerships.

An integral part of Bridgenext’s hiring growth strategy involves the internship program, which is viewed as developing technical talent in Jacksonville and beyond with high schoolers and college students. Mike Marino, Bridgenext’s Director of Operations, says the initial goal was to hire three to five interns during the summer to give back to the community. It quickly became so much more.

Each summer, Bridgenext hires approximately 100 interns to lead the cleaning and re-imaging of thousands of laptops for DCPS. In the program’s first year, Bridgenext and DCPS hosted separate cohorts of interns, but the next year brought a cohort growth that necessitated a merger of their programs. Jim Culbert, Chief Information Officer for DCPS, says the program is a huge task that helps teachers returning to the classroom for day one of the school year.

Student referrals by academy directors or teachers who have directly observed students exhibiting qualities of regular attendance, turning in work, and getting along with others serves as a basis for recruitment for the Summer Project each year beginning in March. After helping students create a resume, a structured interview process commences, and the next cohort of interns is selected. Culbert remarked on the diversity of the program, emphasizing that DCPS is seeing an increase in the number of girls in programs like this and Springfield Middle School’s coding academy.

In May, students are onboarded and scheduled for an orientation/training day followed by a project kickoff meeting for all interns. Topics covered include the support available to students, the benefits they gain (e.g., a paycheck, practical experience, leadership skills), and the expectations and plan outlined to ensure success.

Culbert says it has been rewarding to see students who sat in the Riverside High School auditorium for orientation grow over the years through the program. Approximately 12-14 former interns are full-time permanent employees with the DCPS School Board. Upon their high school graduation, an intern with two years of experience in the program can be brought on and promoted to the Tech I position for a year before an additional promotion to a Tech II at DCPS. Culbert says this award-winning program is one of the biggest highlights of his career at DCPS.

The structure behind the projects allows students to learn skills that will serve them in any industry. One former intern credits her five years of experience with Bridgenext in developing leadership skills that landed her dream job in psychology. Another former intern began the program with the goal of obtaining a history degree and switched his pathway, gaining a permanent position on the Bridgenext JEA team. He is one of five former interns now employed full-time on this team at JEA. Bridgenext has also hired interns onto their full-time team. Employees and interns alike find that work is something they look forward to going to each day thanks to this program.

CSI Companies

The CSI Connect internship program, an initiative that exposes students in underserved Jacksonville communities to technology careers and invests in future technology leaders. The program is building a pipeline of technology students, positioning them for lucrative jobs in the technology industry.

CSI Connect originated in response to a global corporate competition amongst 10 co-ops internationally, where they were challenged with the task of introducing a new way of doing business that closes the economic divide and celebrates diversity and inclusion. The program is offered in partnership with four Jacksonville colleges and the Duval County Public Schools.

“CSI Connect has evolved way beyond a contest,” Fulmore-Hardwick said. “The program empowers students to pursue careers in the tech industry, and it has given our interns the opportunity to be someone they never thought they could be.”

The program launched in May 2022 with six students from Edward Waters College, University of North Florida, and Florida State College of Jacksonville. Each intern was provided a laptop and paired with a mentor in the IT department based on their college discipline. They worked in the CSI Companies’ Jacksonville office alongside the employees and participated in various professional and leadership training related to networking, public speaking, building a brand, financial literacy, and wellness.

The inaugural class of CSI Connect college interns graduated in July 2022. Interns who do well during the program are encouraged to apply for employment at CSI Companies or one of its clients after graduation. Two students have begun full-time careers as a software engineer and a systems analyst at CSI Companies.

“My experience as a tech intern at CSI was eye-opening. It was the kind of hands-on experience I needed to catapult my career in tech. I gained a range of valuable skills both related to my tech background and nuggets of wisdom I’ve gained along the way with the help of my mentors. The more effort I put into this program, the more I reaped the benefits. Everyone is willing to teach as long as I was willing to learn. CSI Connect was truly an amazingly unique experience!” said Brianna Moreland, former college intern turned CSI Business Analyst.

“We have changed the economic position of several students and introduced others to the tech industry,” Fulmore-Hardwick said. “The CSI Connect program promotes diversity in technology and encourages these students to remain in Northeast Florida after they graduate.”

Haskell

Haskell, headquartered in Jacksonville, is a company that combines architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) expertise to deliver performance-driven facilities from concept to ribbon-cutting.

Haskell’s internship programs encompass secondary and post-secondary students. Executive leadership is fully supportive, understanding the integral part the programs play in their talent pipeline.

The high school program began in 2018 with six high schoolers for a six-week program. In 2023, Haskell hosted 14 students, and hopes to continue increasing its cohort size in the years to come. This internship program is an opportunity for students to job shadow, access Haskell University professional development training, work on design/build proposals, visit project sites, and more. Recruitment, interviews, and selection takes place during March and April, with paperwork completion during May for a program launch in June.

Haskell provides paid internship opportunities for students in two-year and four-year programs. For students in a two-year program, the internship length is determined based on the students’ needs, which is discovered during the interview process. Opportunities have been as short as three weeks or a full year, with students’ majors and mentor availability considered.

Students in four-year degree-seeking programs are placed onto active projects and are immediately paired with a hiring manager and mentor. Students undergo an onboarding and orientation process that further connects them with fellow interns and Haskell staff. During the summer, there are five virtual professional development workshops for students, with some led by executive leadership. The experience culminates at a two-day “Intern Summit” at the Jacksonville headquarters, gathering interns for an ice cream social, reception, service project, team building event, and more. A particular feature of this summit is the Intern Pitch, which involves teams of students presenting an idea to benefit the company to judges for the possibility of a monetary award.

Haskell employees feel that interns bring a unique energy to the office. Interns are considered an investment for the company, and it is a program that brings new hires. Within the collegiate internship program, there is about a 90% conversion rate of interns returning for an additional internship opportunity or transitioning to a full-time hire.
