Admissions Process

Earn Up provides resources on the secondary education admissions process.  While the task seems overwhelming and stressful, it can be broken down into manageable parts.  Once you have researched and reflected on what you want to study and the types of jobs you’ll qualify for based on that program of study, take the required standardized tests that will help facilitate college admissions.  To do this, Career Pathways will showcase the region’s target and support industries, the companies within those industries, and the ways you can plug into those industries.

Earn Up emphasizes post-secondary completion by maximizing financial resources, so complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).   Check out Earn Up’s Financial Aid page for more.  Completing the FAFSA is an initial step in seeking Pell grants and other valuable scholarships that can reduce or eliminate the expenses involved in pursuing a college degree.  Understanding this aspect of your education will be a useful tool when considering the admissions process as well.

Tips
  • Be prepared to do a lot of reading in college.
  • Learn time management: use a calendar and plan how to use your time. Learn to manage your time while still in high school, keep a calendar of all exams and paper due dates.
  • One of the biggest transitions between high school and college is development of time management skills – students must learn to balance school and social life.
  • Be prepared to discipline yourself, as the temptation to slack could be great. If you miss four to five classes in a semester, you may fail the class.
  • Being sick affects your ability to be a student – and remember that community living contributes to the cold/flu season.
  • Learn to read – summarize and outline reading.
  • Take notes in class.
  • Start the college and scholarship search as early as possible.
  • Take as many science, math, English, and foreign language courses as you can; they build a foundation for college.
  • Participate in volunteer and community service programs. It helps with scholarships!
  • Take advantage of the advanced classes offered in high school.
  • Think about what characteristics in a university are most important to you (climate, environment, degrees offered, size, location, etc.) before selecting a college.
